How do I gain access to the private groups? There are a couple I would like to join. Thank you.

If you mean the groups Social Groups you can request to become a member. Some of the groups are not that active and it may take a little time to get approval. If you PM the moderator of the group you want to join, they can check the list of members waiting to be approved and add you to the list!
